Artificial lawn in your garden – Start with an installation plan

The first step when buying artificial grass for a garden is to calculate how many metres are needed. Keep in mind that most artificial grass comes in rolls 2 or 4 metres in width. The length can often be ordered to fit the exact dimensions required. Most artificial grass suppliers work with rolls that are 20-25 metres in length. This can also be an important consideration when drawing up an installation plan for your lawn.

From which direction do you view your lawn the most?

Naturally you want to install your artificial grass as efficiently as possible to avoid cutting loss. But you also need to consider the pile direction (nap) of the artificial grass. The most efficient installation manner is not always the most attractive one. From which direction do you view your garden most? The pile direction of the grass should be facing that direction for the best effect. (Note: this applies to all brands of artificial grass from all suppliers!) The nap/pile direction is always lengthwise on the role, never widthwise. The illustration below shows exactly what you should be looking for. Once you roll out the artificial grass mat, you will immediately see what we mean by this.

Benefits of an artificial lawn with V-shape fiber

For the production of artificial lawns various shapes fibers are used. Nowadays you see more and more artificial grass as a substitute for natural grass lawns in gardens or on roof terraces. It is a fact, in 2004, Royal Grass has introduced the first artificial lawn system for this market. The used artificial fiber in this system isn’t to distinguish from natural grass blades. Royal Grass has been developed combining the technology of artificial fiber for sport applications with new revolutionary V-shaped forms. For this, Royal Grass cooperates intensively with Royal TenCate, world market leader in the field of artificial lawns. The form of the artificial fiber used for Royal Grass, is copied from nature. It is also extremely soft, has a very good pile recovery and the colour is beautiful. The result is a natural looking lawn with all the luxury of artificial grass. Royal Grass doesn’t need any watering and it is therefore extremely usable for gardens in dry climates. Royal Grass can be applied everywhere grass is needed but where it normally spoken cannot grow.

What kind of artificial grass system do I need?

There are two systems of artificial grass; with or without a sand fill. Which one you need depends on where your artificial grass will be installed and the intensity of expected use.

Artificial grass with a long blade can be, if needed, strewn with a filler material. The filler material increases the weight of the artificial grass and provides extra stability. This weight keeps the artificial grass in place and prevents wrinkles or creases from developing during use. The filler material also supports the deep-pile artificial grass fibres so that they remain upright. Royal Grass® uses sand to achieve this. The sand is specially developed for this purpose and enhances the natural appearance of our grass. Sandfilled systems are very suitable for high foot-traffic and in public (unattented) spaces.

A long blade of grass requires support. This can be provided by adding a layer of sand or by using a curled fibre integrated into the grass. These curled fibres, which are usually lightcoloured, give support to the deep-pile fibres to stand upright. These grass types can be used for all applications where sand filler is not appropriate. These so called non-filled systems are ideal for domestic use and low to medium foot-traffic. Artificial grass with a curled frizzy fibre can also be installed with a thin layer of sand if desired.

Can I lay artificial turf myself?

In choosing artificial turf of Royal Grass, you are choosing impeccable quality. But what’s the point of impeccable quality if it isn’t expertly laid? Precisely. Installing artificial turf is always challenging work. We advise you to let it done by a dealer. Our dealers have the training, experience and tools to do a professional job. This way, you can be sure of the best results and that you will be able to enjoy a beautifully laid green lawn for many years to come.

Installing artificial turf requires experience. On site, Royal Grass must be cut carefully to size and, if necessary, the pieces must be joined together. This is a precise task, better to be performed by an experienced person. After all, you will be looking at your lawn for many years. The seam joints and lawn edges must be as invisible as possible. Sand filled artificial turf is very natural looking, thanks to the brown coloured sand. The installation however, requires knowledge and special tools. We advise to let this be done by a specialist.

The gardens that feature in our photo gallery have all been laid by specialist landscape gardeners. Have a look at this artificial turf installations.

About artificial grass for lawns and children

Usually we get a lot of questions about the use of artificial grass for lawns and children. Herewith some questions and answers:

Is artificial grass harmful when accidentally eaten?
No, it is not. Both the artificial grass and the fill sand of Royal Grass are completely harmless.

Is it OK to let toddlers go on hands and knees on artificial grass for lawns?
Royal Grass is a smooth and friendly product. Toddlers will not get any abrasions on hands or knees.

Is there any harm in spilling ice-cream and lemonade on artificial grass for lawns?
Both the artificial grass and the fill sand can take this well, but make sure you avoid fibres and sand getting stuck. A small spill can do no harm but always rinse out an ice-cream for instance using plenty of water to make sure it is fully diluted.

Will artificial grass flatten out at the spot where a pool is placed?
The fibres will indeed flatten out completely when weighed down all summer with a heavy object. Once this object is removed, the fibres can be set upright again by brushing them. This is the only possible method. The artificial grass around the pool will be subjected to intensive use, so on these locations the grass will flatten sooner than on locations where it is used purely for its decorative value. Even after brushing, there will be a visible difference. Inform the customer of this to avoid disappointment later. Royal Grass flattens less than other artificial grass because of its V-shaped tufts. Moreover, carefully calculate the base to allow for the weight of the pool to be placed!

Artificial grass – The garden trend for 2012

Grass is a beautiful garden product, pity that it is fragile and not suitable for intensive use and/or changing weather conditions. One of the best innovations of the latest years is artificial grass for home and garden. It is available for some time now, but currently it is a real garden trend. At the moment artificial turf can hardly be distinguished from real grass. When you see it, you will not believe that it is artificial. This garden product fits perfectly with the new trend of  ‘the lounge garden’ and ‘outdoor living experience’. Garden design is becoming more and more a lifestyle and garden products must fit this trend. A garden must be beautiful to watch, but there must also be ‘lived’. Trends such as the outdoor living area and outdoor kitchen are unstoppable. Intensive use of the garden is actually asking for tile paving. However, we prefer to surround ourselves with green and friendly products. Beautiful artificial grasses, such as Royal Grass, offer this solution. The benefits of pavement, but the green feel and look of natural grass. Moreover, it is great to combine with natural green. Really, you will not believe the grass is fake!
